Delivering our climate ambitions

Serie-74-tonnare flisbil HCT Södra

Södra continues to work actively, together with customers and suppliers, to reduce its climate impact throughout the value chain. Affärsverken in Karlskrona is one of our customers which has chosen to join Södra's Conscious delivery* initiative and is investing in reducing emissions in its logistics chain.

Södra supplies more than 140 GWh of biofuels annually to Affärsverken for the combined heat and power plant in Karlskrona as part of a collaboration that goes back more than 10 years.

Södra has set ambitious climate targets for the future, and one important aspect was to have our targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The short-term target is to halve Södra's direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. But we know that we can reach climate neutrality faster, and more efficiently, through collaboration with our customers and supply chain partners by finding solutions together.

The transport sector accounts for a significant part of the emissions that have a negative climate impact. Therefore, the work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport is an important piece of the puzzle in achieving our climate goals. With the Conscious delivery* initiative, this work has come under focus, from family forestry to customer deliveries.

The road to a more sustainable transport

Affärsverken in Karlskrona supplies services to society such as heat, energy and sanitation, and sustainability is a common thread throughout their work. After many years of collaboration on sustainable bioproducts between Södra and Affärsverken for the combined heat and power plant in Karlskrona, it now feels natural to expand this collaboration further. By adding Conscious delivery, we are jointly ensuring we put sustainable transport in focus when delivering biofuels to Affärsverken, something that will lead to a reduction in our common emissions of greenhouse gases.

“To have the opportunity to do this with a partner such as Affärsverken, which, like Södra, is passionate about the climate and the transition to a greener world, feels very exciting and just right for our business going forward,” says Fredrik Allemog, Sales Director Södra Bioproducts.

“At Affärsverken, we have a completely fossil fuel-free process for electricity and heat production, but it has not included deliveries of biofuel. This autumn we started Conscious delivery.  As the largest district heating company in Blekinge, Sweden, this joint effort together with such a large player as Södra feels very positive. This is one of many steps along the way to be fossil independent by 2030 and we hope to continue with this concept in the future”, says Joakim Lindahl, Business Area Manager Heating at Affärsverken.

*Conscious delivery – in brief:

Södra introduced the Conscious Delivery initiative in autumn 2023, a replacement for the previous Zero Fossil initiative, with the aim of inspiring our customers and creating the opportunity to start collaborations to find new ways to reduce fossil fuel emissions in the logistics chain. Our dedicated employees at Södra, in collaboration with suppliers, have explored different options and transport routes. Reduced emissions are achieved by using HVO and the mass balance/fuel insetting principle.
