Södra strikes Gold: In top 1% for CSR

We’re delighted to announce that we have been rated among the top one percent of pulp, paper and paperboard companies for CSR. Assessed by EcoVadis, the France-based provider of business sustainability ratings, the Södra Group won a Gold award for the second year running, scoring 73 out of 100 in the EcoVadis business sustainability ratings (the average score is 46).

Södra Cell’s Sustainability Information Manager, Eva Thuresson, says that while we scored particularly highly on environmental factors, the ratings also look at a range of other factors including sustainable procurement, ethics, labour and health and safety.

“We had some customers, from Sweden and Austria, who asked us to get assessed,” explains Thuresson, “as it makes their lives easier to get their external suppliers independently rated. We fill in a very detailed questionnaire which we have to back up with documentation. We don’t often get feedback if a customer asks us to fill in a supplier questionnaire but a very positive thing about EcoVadis is that in addition to the rating, we are given pointers for improvement so we can aim higher still.

“We are already in the top 1% but there are still one or two things we could work on, such as additional certifications, in information security, for example. Södra Cell already has quite a collection of certifications and standards, including ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environment, ISO 45001 for health and safety and ISO 50001 for energy, but there may be one or two more Group-wide to look at. We always aim to edge the score upwards.”
