All aboard: Shipments on track to Circleville
It was a new step for Södra in the U.S. last month when we delivered our first shipment entirely by rail across 700 km, from the port of Baltimore in Maryland to Circleville, Ohio.
“We had been supplying Sofidel’s mill in Florida for a number of years when they began drawing up plans for a greenfield mill in Ohio,” explains Sourcing Manager Anders Ripström. “The Florida mill is located quite close to the port, so deliveries there are made by truck. However, as in Europe, the U.S. is experiencing a shortage of truck drivers and haulage rates are rising. Rail is an efficient alternative, not least because in the U.S., maximum load is approx. 80 tonnes compared to approx. 60 tonnes in Europe.”
“Fortunately, Sofidel had the foresight when building its new mill in Ohio to include rail infrastructure in its plans. After careful planning and detailed discussions with our local agent FMS, we had the options in place to begin sending shipments by rail from the port of Baltimore as soon as we got our first shipment to the port earlier this year. So it’s fair to say everything is on track and running smoothly – literally!”
