Digitalisation: It’s a data-driven world out there

Thomas Håkansson has a new job title that reflects the growing importance of digitalisation for Södra. As the first Head of Technology Development and a member of the Management Board, one of his initial responsibilities has been to draw up a roadmap for Södra Cell’s digitalisation which encompasses everything from customer satisfaction and administration effectiveness to industrial efficiency and cyber security.

“Part of my new focus is overseeing maintenance across all three mills,” Håkansson explains. “Our goal is always to optimise efficiency, resources and competence. We are working towards more data-driven predictive maintenance, for example. We’re investing in several thousand new sensors at all three mills, for example, working with ABB, but also with the telecommunications company Telia and condition monitoring specialist SPM Instrument.

“In addition, we have a pilot project at Mönsterås looking at how to increase stability within the digester yet further using advanced process controls. The aim is always consistent, optimum quality for our customers.

“These are just a few examples,” says Håkansson, “we have a lot of different projects in the pipeline from simulators and tracking to expert management and alarm systems. The focus is on seeing how digitalisation can help us optimise just about everything we do today.”
