The new yet familiar face of Mönsterås: Karin Dernegård
The new Mill Manager at Mönsterås is no stranger to the mill, having been Production Manager there, among other roles, before she took on Operational Excellence at corporate level. Now she’s back, Karin is keen to drive the mill forward on all levels, from enhancing product quality and teamwork to overseeing the latest investments.
Not least among her challenges is climate change, with issues such as energy efficiency and minimising water consumption high on the agenda.
“After an exceptionally warm and dry summer, river levels from our source, the River Emån, are low,” she says. “Luckily, we have one of the lowest water consumption rates of any pulp mill, so our work over many years is paying off, but we continue to liaise with other stakeholders, including government, local authorities and local businesses, to make resource optimisation an ongoing project.”
Her recent experience heading up Operational Excellence will also be put to good use. “Efficiency is a matter for everyone: forests, customers and everything in between. I will be looking at ways to enhance efficiency wherever I can, including looking at ways to enhance the energy efficiency of our pulp to benefit our customers. I’ll also be overseeing ongoing investment such as the upgrade of our evaporation plant which will start up next year.
“We have a great team and excellent communication between the Mill Managers at Södra, so everyone shares ideas and experience, and I intend to build on that. It’s especially valuable for personnel issues too, such as health and safety, not just production.
“Although I know I’ll inevitably be behind a desk for much of my time, it’s great to be back out and about in the mill at Mönsterås whenever I can!”
