Södra’s CLT used for UN17 Village, a project integrating all Sustainable Development Goals

In southern Ørestad in Denmark, an innovative and sustainable residential concept in timber has emerged. The five buildings, with a total area of 35,000 m², have been developed by integrating all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Södra delivered cross-laminated timber (CLT) for Kronen, Denmark’s highest and largest apartment building in timber at the time of construction.

The vision was to create a safe and secure community for the residents, which is why the project has focused on using natural materials and innovative solutions. UN17 Village is still under construction, and the two buildings Lunden and Kronen are currently completed. The first approximately 200 residents have moved into their homes, while the other three buildings are expected to be finished during 2024. In total, there will be around 1,100 residents living in UN17 Village.

Södra delivered CLT as part of the frame of Denmark’s highest and largest apartment building in timber at the time of construction. The Kronen building in UN17 Village is 24 metres high and has 80 apartments. The architectural design and structure of the Kronen building was focused on an optimal indoor climate, healthy indoor and outdoor air, good lighting in the apartments, good sound insulation and a minimal carbon footprint. CLT contributed to many of these factors.

- We see timber and bio-based products as natural components of tomorrow’s building materials. From a sustainability perspective, the UN17 Village project was, and is, a spectacular initiative that is showing today what will be required from the construction industry in the future but is also showing what is possible. While UN17 Village was a one-of-a-kind project when it started, we are now seeing and hearing about similar initiatives. I think this is the way forward for the industry and something we’ll be seeing a lot of in the future, said Kenny Holm, Market Manager for Södra Building System Denmark.

CLT is a natural material with many applications. Södra produces CLT with the lowest carbon footprint on the market, and with raw material from responsibly managed forests in southern Sweden.

The CLT is produced in Varberg, in southern Sweden. The product is made from sawn pine wood, which is finger-jointed and glued together to form lamellas. The lamellas are then layered crosswise to form a solid panel of CLT. This structure creates a strong and rigid structural component with good dimensional stability. Using modern CNC machining, we can achieve high precision, which makes the construction time on site more efficient.
