The struggles

It has not only been in the forest that harsh winds have blown over the years. Conflicts and crises have come and gone. The early 1950s debate was about whether forest ownership should belong to a few large parties or remain with individual forest owners. The right to own and use the forest is an important issue for Södra.

The forest and politics

All forest owners are somewhat affected by various societal decisions. Over the years, Södra has worked so that members can conduct their forestry without too many restrictions. In 1983, forest owners demonstrated against the government's proposal for compulsory felling and compulsory deposits in a timber account.

The crisis that turned around

At the end of the 1970s, Södra found itself in financial crisis. The state stepped in as a shareholder, but after several drastic measures, Södra once again became fully owned by its members.
