New technology takes the Värö sawmill to the next level
Södra continues to strengthen its position in modern sawmill technology. At the Värö facility, two major technological upgrades have recently been brought into operation, both with a clear focus on precision, raw material efficiency and a safe working environment.
When Sawmill Manager Kerstin Jonasson talks about the development, she is clear about the direction: every investment must contribute to both safety and production quality. One of the most significant additions is the implementation of GoldenEye Transverse, an advanced AI based scanner from Microtec that analyses up to 240 boards per minute and enables strength grading in accordance with EN 14081. The Värö sawmill is the first in the world to combine this technology with Microtec’s patented Reduced Shadow Chain Conveyor and AI based inpainting, which reduces shadow effects in the scanning process. The new technology also contributes to a safer working environment, with reduced noise and dust levels and a decreased need for manual intervention among the key benefits.
The technological shift is not about increasing speed, but about taking a step towards even better decision making data and more optimal use of raw materials – something that enhances the sawmill’s competitiveness in markets across Europe, the USA and Asia.
Earlier in the process, the technology has also seen improvements. At the saw intake, an AI driven rotation correction system from Swedish Taigatech is now in use. The system analyses log positioning and fine tunes it ahead of sawing with millimetre precision.
Looking ahead, the development journey will continue. At Värö sawmill, the team is closely following how other industries work with automation and advanced production technologies. At the same time, knowledge exchange is ongoing within Södra Wood and between the sawmills.
– Automation is crucial for the future. We have already identified the next steps and are evaluating what best suits our facility, says Kerstin Jonasson.
