Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does Södra produce, and what does that mean in practical terms?

In 2024, Södra produced a total of 1,682 GWh. The surplus amounted to 272 GWh and was delivered to the electricity grid, equivalent to the annual household electricity consumption of over 50,000 detached homes or the electricity required to power more than 120,000 electric cars for a year.

What are the benefits of choosing member electricity?

Södra’s member electricity means that households close to our productions sites can access locally produced energy with no climate footprint at a favourable price, because our sustainable processes generate more electricity than they consume.

How does the forest contribute to energy production?

The forest is a renewable resource that benefits the climate both while it grows and by replacing fossil-based products. During processing, an energy surplus is created which is used to produce fossil-free and locally generated electricity.

How can you be sure that energy from Södra is climate-smart?

Our energy is fossil-free because it’s the surplus electricity generated by our production sites, which produce more electricity than they consume.

Sustainability

Sustainable resource use

Today, all our electricity production comes from fossil-free fuels. The energy we generate at our production facilities originates primarily from timber-based raw materials. Our various industrial operations produce a significant surplus of green energy for external customers in the form of renewable electricity, district heating, and biofuels.
