Kristianstad's new reuse facility built with CLT

At Kristianstad’s new sustainability park, the Reuse Centre has now opened – a place where materials are given new life and circularity is at the core. Together with Treano Bygg AB, Södra has delivered a timber frame that helps reduce climate impact.

Projekt Dungen, Värö, januari 2026.

About the project

Returum is Kristianstad’s largest recycling centre and an important part of the municipality’s efforts to create a more circular society. The new building houses both a reuse shop and a workshop – a place that not only reduces waste but also inspires new ways of thinking about resources and reuse.

The building has been constructed with a frame in cross-laminated timber (CLT) from Södra, produced from locally sourced and certified raw materials from family-owned forests.

“Since 2023, Treano has proactively proposed climate-improved structural systems and foundations in all projects where it is commercially viable and within our control. In several projects, this has included a shift to CLT and glulam, as well as climate-improved concrete slabs, resulting in significant reductions in carbon emissions. Treano actively collaborates with suppliers that support both our customers’ and our own ambitious climate targets. Our collaboration with Södra is a strong example of this, and the Returum Reuse Centre clearly demonstrates how we can contribute together to sustainable construction and circularity,” says Andreas Holmgren, Head of Sustainability at Treano Bygg AB.

The choice of material has contributed to an efficient construction process and a structural solution that combines technical performance with low climate impact.

By choosing timber as the structural material, the project has delivered several added values:
  • Reduced climate impact
  • Renewable material that stores carbon
  • A robust and flexible structure
“We at Södra are pleased to have been entrusted by Treano Bygg AB to deliver CLT to the Returum Reuse Centre and to contribute to reduced climate impact in the construction process. As a structural material, CLT offers many advantages from a social, environmental and economic perspective. The material is renewable, natural and stores carbon throughout its lifespan, making it a smart choice for structural construction,” says Andreas Johnsson, Sales Representative at Södra Building Systems.

Our offer

Build smart. Make less impact.

We offer processed elements in cross-laminated timber (CLT) for structural construction. Building with CLT results in lower climate impact compared to fossil-based construction materials, as it consists of a renewable resource and stores carbon dioxide.
