A meeting between land and sea - a house boat built in CLT

A longing for life on the water became the starting point for a houseboat built with cross-laminated timber (CLT) from Södra. With millimetre precision in installation, creative CNC machining and smart use of resources, the project has delivered satisfied guests and plans for more houseboats.

About the project

The project was carried out in collaboration with R.A Byggen, with the ambition to create a stable and sustainable structure for life on the water. The choice of CLT provided the right conditions in terms of weight, strength and design flexibility.

Södra supplied prefabricated CLT panels where details such as window and door openings were already integrated. Thanks to advanced CNC machining, each component was produced with high precision, minimising the need for on-site adjustments. Installation was fast and efficient. All parts fitted with millimetre accuracy, and the entire frame was erected in just a few hours.

The precise fit contributed to both a smooth construction process and a high-quality end result. At the same time, the material enabled efficient use of resources. Off-cuts from production were reused and applied to other elements in the project.

One of the key advantages in the project was that the CLT could serve as both structural frame and finished interior surface. Walls and ceilings were left exposed, saving both time and materials while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere on board.

The properties of CLT make it particularly suitable for projects like this. The structure is not only strong and stable, but also possible to dismantle and reassemble in a new location. This creates long-term flexibility and opens up for circular solutions.

As Södra’s CLT is locally produced and stores carbon throughout its lifespan, it also contributes to more sustainable construction.

Our offer

Build smart. Make less impact.

We offer processed elements in cross-laminated timber (CLT) for structural construction. Building with CLT results in lower climate impact compared to fossil-based construction materials, as it consists of a renewable resource and stores carbon dioxide.
