Sustainable tannin? Done!

Tannin is the latest addition to our range of forest-based products. We continue to be predominantly focused on pulp, but the range of sustainable solutions being produced around our pulp process is growing.
Värö will create a vegetable tanning agent from bark which means leather (and other potential future applications such as adhesives) can be processed in a more environmentally friendly way. The line will have the capacity to produce tannin for millions of square metres of leather.
“Now is the time to unite and maximise the potential of every tree, exploring innovative applications for tannin collaboratively. Together, we can develop fossil-free products and contribute to a more sustainable future," says Viktor Odenbrink, Sales Director, Södra Bioproducts.
Using bark for tanning is not new, but we are now industrializing the process in which the tanning substance is extracted from the bark and transformed into a product for tanning leather. We intend to produce large volumes of our tannin for the market and we’re open to possible new markets where this sustainable tannin could be used to do good. If you think tannin could make a difference in any of your operations and help us all transition to a fossil-free society, let us know.
