Frequently asked questions

What is Treated Low Pressure NTR-A?

Treated Low Pressure NTR-A is a wood protection class used for timber that will be in contact with soil or fresh water. Timber classified as NTR-A is pressure-treated to provide effective protection against rot and biological degradation. This class is commonly used in constructions where durability and safety are critical.

Examples include:

  • Posts and fence posts
  • Bridges and garden timber
  • Exterior stairs and balconies
  • Decking battens placed directly on the ground
  • Freshwater installations such as docks
  • Framing structures beneath decking
  • Playground and outdoor fitness equipment
What is Treated High Pressure NTR-AB?

Treated High Pressure NTR-AB is a wood protection class used for timber intended for use above ground. Timber classified as NTR-AB is pressure-treated to provide effective protection against rot and biological degradation, but it is not as heavily treated as NTR-A. NTR-AB is commonly used for constructions that are not in direct contact with soil or water.

Examples include:

  • Fences and privacy screens
  • Trellises and pergolas
  • Cladding timber
  • Fascia boards and drip boards
  • Roof battens
  • Decking above ground
  • Playground and outdoor fitness equipment
How do I maintain my outdoor areas built with pressure-treated wood?

To maintain your outdoor areas built with pressure-treated wood and extend their lifespan, follow these steps:

  • Cleaning: Use a scrubbing brush and mild detergent to clean the surface. Avoid using a pressure washer, as it can damage the wood.
  • Oiling: Apply wood oil regularly—preferably once a year—to maintain its water-repellent properties and protect against cracking. Use an oil suitable for pressure-treated wood.
  • Inspection: Regularly check the wood for signs of damage, mould, or algae. If you find any issues, address them immediately to prevent further deterioration.
  • Weather Protection: If possible, protect your wooden structures from direct sunlight and heavy rain by using covers or placing them under a shelter.
  • Repairs: Replace damaged or rotten parts immediately to prevent the damage from spreading to other parts of the structure.

By following these steps, your outdoor areas made from pressure-treated wood will remain in good condition and look great for years to come.

How do I recycle treated timber?

Recycling treated timber requires special handling, as it often contains chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Here are a few steps you can follow:

  1. Drop-off at a Recycling Center: Pressure-treated wood must be taken to a recycling centre equipped to handle hazardous waste. It is illegal to burn treated wood yourself, as it can release harmful substances.

  2. Sorting: At the recycling centre, the wood is sorted to determine whether it qualifies as hazardous waste. Modern treated wood often contains fewer harmful substances and may sometimes be reused or recycled as material.

  3. Energy Recovery: If the wood is classified as hazardous, it is typically sent to energy recovery facilities where it is incinerated under controlled conditions to generate energy.
  4. Contact Your Municipality: If you're unsure how to handle your pressure-treated wood, contact your local municipality for specific guidelines and information about the nearest recycling centre. By following these steps, you can ensure that your pressure-treated wood is handled in an environmentally friendly and safe way.
How much decking do I need?

Decking is a type of outdoor flooring made from treated wood that is easy to maintain and durable. It’s commonly used to create outdoor spaces that are both functional and visually appealing. There are different types of decking, including pressure-treated wood decking, composite decking, and hardwood decking. Your choice depends on your preferences, budget, and local climate.

Measure the area where you plan to install the decking  in square metres. Add extra material to account for waste and potential damage. Start by preparing the ground by levelling and draining it. Then lay a ground fabric and gravel before building the frame and attaching the decking boards.
