Sweden’s first coffee roastery built in wood

Since 2025, Arvid Nordquist’s innovative coffee roastery has stood completed in Järfälla. With a vision of creating a modern, efficient and resource-conscious facility with low climate impact and a good working environment, they chose to build most of the structure in wood.

About the project

Together with RO-gruppen, Södra supplied cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam for the roastery’s structural frame.

The use of wood has significantly reduced the carbon emissions associated with the construction, as the carbon storage function remains even when the wood is part of the building. Overall, the frame of the roastery and production facility consists of 70 percent wood, while the office structure is made up of 90 percent wood.

-It feels fantastic that the frame of our new roastery has been built using wood from Swedish family-owned forests. Choosing wood reflects our commitment to sustainability. The trees’ ability to capture carbon and produce oxygen, the continued carbon storage capacity of the timber, and the fact that we have contributed to jobs in Sweden are all highly valuable sustainability aspects, says Erica Bertilsson, Director of Sustainability and Communications at Arvid Nordquist.

The new coffee roastery has been built in accordance with Miljöbyggnad Silver and is a unique project as it is Sweden’s first – and one of the few in the world – roasteries constructed in wood. Through this project, Arvid Nordquist aims to lead the way in showing what future buildings can look like, with a focus on functionality, aesthetics and sustainability.

Wood is an outstanding material that can replace, but also be combined with, steel and concrete in complex buildings. CLT offers many advantages for constructing both offices and industrial facilities: it provides a robust and solid structure while also creating a cosy and welcoming atmosphere.

Södra’s value chain contributes to CLT’s low climate impact

The production of CLT takes place in synergy with Södra’s pulp mill and sawmill at the Värö site outside Varberg.

In this way, we utilise the entire tree and refine the sustainable forest raw material from responsibly managed family forestry holdings into renewable, climate-smart products and solutions that create value for many people in a more natural society.

Södra was founded in 1938 on the idea that we are stronger together. Today, Södra is Sweden’s largest forest-owner association with more than 50,000 family forest owners as members. Together, the members own a world-leading industry that processes forest raw material into renewable products in pulp, timber, building systems, liquid bioproducts and energy.

What is CLT?
CLT (cross-laminated timber) is a renewable material with great potential. The product is made from sawn spruce timber, which is finger-jointed and glued together into lamellas. These lamellas are then laid crosswise in layers, creating a solid CLT element. This construction provides a strong and rigid building component with high dimensional stability. Using modern CNC technology, we achieve high precision, which makes on-site construction more efficient.

Our offer

A wise choice from family forestry

We offer processed elements in cross-laminated timber (CLT) for structural construction. Building with CLT results in lower climate impact compared to fossil-based construction materials, as it consists of a renewable resource and stores carbon dioxide.
