An oasis of wood
Cederhusen consists of 245 apartments, making it one of the world’s largest timber building projects in an inner-city setting.
The buildings are clad in red and yellow cedar shingles and panelling from Södra, which are installed by the contractor ByggPartner. Selwan Rafat, Site Manager at ByggPartner, believes that the choice of cedar shingles creates a truly beautiful result and highlights the craftsmanship. He is optimistic about the trend toward sustainable construction and notes that they have already completed several projects using cross-laminated timber (CLT) frame, but adds that a wooden facade makes it even better.
Tereza Tatsi, Supervisor at ByggPartner, feels that wood contributes to a better and more pleasant work environment, and cedar has a wonderful scent. She says it is enjoyable to work with wood since it is a natural material: “we are bringing nature into the city.”
The wood is not only reflected in the frame, but also in the facade, which makes a distinct impression in Hagastaden, with its multiple tall buildings and dominance of hard surfaces. The wood complements the stone city’s character and sets itself apart from the rest of the area, according to Josef Eder, Founder and architect SAR/MSA at General Architecture.
Hagastaden feels predominantly urban, with strong influences and inspiration from Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Cederhusen forms an oasis of wood in this environment. There are many advantages to living in timber buildings, such as the warm-feeling environment. People relate positively to wood, and experience shows that we perceive it as providing a more comfortable indoor climate. On entering one is struck by special atmosphere and aroma which is highly appealing, says John Billberg, Founder and architect SAR/MSA at General Architecture.
Cedar is a popular and beautiful wood product that is weather-resistant, dimensionally stable, and has a natural resistance to rot. These qualities mean that cedar wood does not require surface treatment and can age gracefully. It is well-suited for cladding exterior walls and roofs. The square profile offers flexibility in designing buildings with unique forms.

Facade, interior cladding, and special requests
We meet needs on request and respond to requirements, for example, if a facade is to be used for a building with specific environmental standards or if it needs to meet specific fire requirements. Södra's project department has high product knowledge and long experience.
