Sweden’s first coffee roastery in wood built with CLT from family forestry

Since 2025, Arvid Nordquist’s innovative coffee roastery has been completed in Järfälla in Sweden. With the vision of a modern, efficient and resource‑efficient roastery with low climate impact and a good working environment, they chose to build the majority of the structural frame in wood.

Together with RO‑gruppen, Södra has delivered cross‑laminated timber (CLT) and glulam for the roastery’s structural frame. Using wood has significantly reduced the carbon emissions associated with the build, as its carbon‑storage function remains even when the timber is part of the building. In total, the frame of the roastery and production facility consists of 70 per cent wood, and the office building’s frame consists of as much as 90 per cent wood.

“It feels fantastic that the frame of our new roastery has been built using timber from Swedish family‑owned forests. Choosing wood reflects our commitment to sustainability. The trees’ ability to capture carbon dioxide and create oxygen, wood’s continued carbon‑storage capacity, and the fact that we have contributed to jobs in Sweden are all highly valuable sustainability aspects,” says Erica Bertilsson, Director of Sustainability and Communications at Arvid Nordquist.

The new coffee roastery has been constructed in accordance with Miljöbyggnad Silver and is a unique project, being Sweden’s first and one of the few roasteries in the world built in wood. Through the project, Arvid Nordquist wants to show the way for what future buildings can look like, with a focus on function, aesthetics and sustainability.

“Wood is a fantastic material that can replace – but also be combined with – both steel and concrete in complex buildings. CLT offers many advantages when building both offices and industrial facilities; it provides a robust and solid structure as well as a warm and welcoming experience,” says Marie Olovsdotter, Project Manager at Södra.

Södra’s value chain contributes to the low climate impact of CLT
Production of CLT takes place in symbiosis with Södra’s pulp mill and sawmill at the facility in Värö, outside Varberg. In this way, we make full use of the entire tree and refine the sustainable forest raw material from responsibly managed family forests into renewable, climate‑smart products and solutions that create value for many people in a more natural society.

Södra was founded in 1938 on the idea that we are stronger together. Today, Södra is Sweden’s largest forest‑owner association, with more than 50,000 family forest owners as members. Together, Södra’s members own a world‑leading industrial operation that refines forest raw material into renewable products in pulp, timber, building systems, liquid bioproducts and energy.

What is CLT?
CLT is a renewable material with great potential. The product is made from sawn spruce timber, which is finger‑jointed and glued together into lamellas. These lamellas are then cross‑laid in layers, creating a solid CLT element. This structure provides a strong and rigid building component with high dimensional stability. With the help of modern CNC technology, we achieve high precision, which makes construction time on site more efficient.
