Climate action – a key part of Södra’s sustainability work

Forests and the forest industry are enablers of the green transition, and Södra aims to be a driving force in the shift towards a climate-neutral society. We have set clear climate targets that are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) – a global organisation that reviews corporate climate goals and ensures they are aligned with scientific research. This means our targets are in line with the Paris Agreement’s ambition to limit global warming to below 1.5 °C.

Södra’s climate targets in brief

  • Halve our direct emissions of fossil greenhouse gases by 2030 compared with 2020.
  • Halve our indirect emissions of fossil greenhouse gases by 2030 compared with 2020 (excluding emissions from further processing and capital goods).
  • By 2027 at the latest, customers accounting for 70% of Södra’s indirect fossil greenhouse gas emissions must have set their own science-based targets.

Forests and the green transition

Forests offer significant opportunities in the transition to a climate-neutral society – they absorb carbon dioxide, and forest-based products can replace fossil-based materials. Forest owners need to adapt their forests and forestry practices to a changing climate. Family forestry members in Södra have access to advisory services, training and tools to support climate adaptation – from choosing tree species to management methods that strengthen carbon sinks and promote biodiversity. By using the forest wisely, we can reduce emissions and create fossil-free solutions that make a difference for future generations.

Collaboration and emission reductions across the value chain

At Södra, we have a long-standing commitment to reduce direct emissions of fossil greenhouse gases, but the most challenging ones remain. Most of our emissions are indirect – for example, from transport, purchased goods and further processing of our products by our customers. Reducing these emissions requires collaboration across the entire value chain – from members and suppliers to customers – while maintaining a focus on business value. Through dialogue and joint initiatives, we can drive progress and inspire more stakeholders to set targets and reduce their emissions over time.

“We have a clear direction: to reduce our climate impact across the value chain while increasing climate benefits through the forest and our products. This requires commitment throughout the organisation and close collaboration with customers, suppliers and members. Together, we can make a real difference,” says Jessica Nordin, Head of Sustainability at Södra.

Climate action plans with concrete measures

Achieving our targets requires structured efforts across the organisation. That’s why each business area within Södra has its own climate action plan.

“The plans specify the measures to be implemented for reducing emissions and are reviewed annually. This integration makes climate action a natural part of our business operations and tactical planning. The work is coordinated by Södra’s climate team, which includes representatives from all business areas, procurement and sustainability,” says Agata Andersson, coordinator of the climate team.

Examples of current initiatives

  • Electrifying transport: We have invested in an electric truck powered by our own fossil-free electricity and are participating in an innovation project for electric trucks (Skogforsk’s TREE project).
  • Building charging infrastructure: There are nearly 400 charging points for passenger cars at our facilities and offices, and around 90 new ones were installed in 2024. We are also building charging infrastructure for electric trucks at Södra’s sites in Orrefors, Långasjö, Mörrum and Mönsterås.
  • Improving industrial efficiency: We are investing in energy efficiency and replacing fossil fuels with renewable alternatives.
  • Setting requirements and collaboration with suppliers: We set clear requirements and collaborate with our suppliers to reduce emissions. For example, by choosing input materials (i.e. materials required in the production process) with lower greenhouse gas emissions, we jointly contribute to a more sustainable value chain.
  • Conscious delivery: A customer offering aimed at reducing emissions from the delivery of our products to customers.
