Södra’s sawmill history begins when it took over a sawmill in Hallabro, Blekinge, in 1943. Production wasn’t large but met the needs of customers in the vicinity. Since then, the customer base has grown to become global.

Bold investments in pulp mills

After World War II, the demand for firewood decreased, prompting the build-up of Södra’s pulp industry, with the first mill completed in Mönsterås in 1958.

The forest – industry’s origin

Sometimes one might imagine that villages in the past were entirely self-sufficient, but that was rarely the case. Farmers needed to procure money for taxes and to buy ironwork, fabrics, and other things made better elsewhere. Therefore, they needed something to sell to others. Thanks to the small village sawmills with circular saws, the forest found new uses and value.

Dissatisfaction over the lack of industrial investments in Östergötland and new sawmill technology enabling more large-scale production were the backgrounds to the inclusion of a sawmill in Kisa in the 1966 industrial package.

An unusual branch on Södra’s industrial tree

The manufacturing of trucks at Lidhult's Mechanical Workshop (LMV) can be seen as an unusual industrial activity within Södra. Its history dates back to Halland’s Forest Owners Association, which for many years ran a workshop business.

Refining the forest is the key to success

A tar factory in Lenhovda became the springboard into industry for Södra. Tar and turpentine were extracted for use as driving gas for cars or sold to hospitals, military facilities, and individual property owners.

Imagine life without paper. How would it look? Napkins, paper towels, sketchbooks, newspapers, and books are all made of paper, and the manufacturing technology goes far back. Sweden’s oldest paper mill is located in Skåne. Paper has been made there since the 1500s.
