Forestry and the processing of timber have been at the heart of Södra's operations since the start, continuously striving to optimise forestry through innovative methods and sustainable solutions. By investing in research and development, and working closely with forest owners, Södra has created a business that is not only economically viable but also environmentally responsible and socially sustainable.

The Farmer and the forest

Through the millennia, many people have worked in the forests. For a long time, forestry was just one task among many—or rather, many tasks among others. Because it was only occasionally that a whole tree needed to be felled. More often, it was about cutting and pollarding leaves for fodder, collecting windfalls and fallen branches for firewood, chopping sticks for fences, or herding animals to pasture.

Increasing timber stocks

The timber stocks have increased over the last 80 years. Despite increased harvesting, we have more forest today than ever before, thanks to replanting.

Technological development in the forest

Until the 1960s, timber was hauled with horses or tractors. During the 1960s, mechanized forwarding began, and today almost all forwarding is done by machine.

High ambition for nature conservation

For many forest owners, consideration for nature and cultural heritage values has long been a natural part of forestry. But in 1993, a new forest policy was introduced that stipulates that forestry should be driven based on two equal goals, one for the environment and one for timber production.
