For more than 50 years, we have been working with seedling production with investment in both research and plant material development to cultivate the best seedlings for southern Swedish conditions. The nurseries offer seedlings that are robust and grow rapidly, achieving high wood quality and survival rate. The seedlings are mainly spruce and pine, but also other softwood species and deciduous varieties.
Birch seedlings are produced annually at the nursery in Falkenberg, and most of the birch seeds needed come from Skogforsk's seed plantation in Ekebo. Since birch seed is limited, Södra built a greenhouse for birch seed cultivation in Falkenberg in 2016. The first birch seed harvest was in 2022, which then increased during 2023 and 2024. In 2025, Falkenberg will deliver a total of one million birch seedlings from its own and Skogforsk's cultivation.
Freezer for Seedlings
Södra has a freezer in Falkenberg, with the capacity to handle 40 million forest seedlings. The freezer allows Södra to meet the increased demand for high-quality forest seedlings from family forestry in the long term.
The nurseries provide advice and collaborate with our field organization on seedling matters. Plant management includes loading and transport of seedlings from the nursery to members.
