Kinda sawmill investment boosts family forestry
In line with its strategy to make more from every tree and to strengthen the long-term competitiveness of family forestry, Södra is to invest more than one billion SEK in its Kinda sawmill in Kisa, southern Östergötland in Sweden.
This is one of the largest investments ever in Södra’s sawmill operations. Once completed, the facility’s capacity will increase by 50 percent, to an annual volume of 300,000 cubic meters of sawn timber, meaning an increased supply of high-quality woodchips for Södra’s pulp mills. The investment also includes a new pellet mill with an annual capacity of 25,000 tons of pellets for green energy production, and potential future production of biocarbon.
Why should pulp customers care?
In addition to woodchips from sawmill operations, it’s the process of nurturing forests for construction materials that yields a sustainable source of pulpwood, through thinnings and the use of wood from final harvesting which does not have suitable dimensions for construction.
Sawn timber is a sustainable building material and plays a central role in Södra’s product offering and contribution to the green transition. A competitive process is key to using the raw materials from family forestry in the best possible way and creating valuable products for customers and consumers.
“This is a forward-looking investment for Södra, where we continue to make more of every tree and strengthen our position in a location close to both raw materials and the market,” said Lotta Lyrå, CEO of Södra.
The investment strengthens Södra’s position as a long-term and reliable supplier of timber products both in Sweden and globally. The sawmill’s location in a region experiencing significant growth, provides opportunities to increase market share and ensures a strong local presence. Implementation is expected to take place in stages and be fully operational by 2028.
