Parfym Södra Cell Bioproducts

Although the perfume in the bottles is exactly the same, there is an important difference. The one on the right is actually green, as it contains Liquid Forest™ Turpentine from Södra.

Turpentine is a forest product that has been used for hundreds of years. As companies today look for renewable alternatives to fossil-based additives, turpentine has become more widely used than ever.

Our turpentine has become the green choice for many manufacturers of perfumes and flavours, and in other industrial processes turpentine is frequently used as a diluent and solvent. And regardless of context, Liquid Forest™ Turpentine is always climate smart and renewable.

How we produce turpentine

Turpentine (crude sulphate turpentine) is mainly produced by degassing when the wood chips for our pulp are heated with steam and hot cooking liquor. The turpentine is directed to a heat exchanger where it is condensed into liquid form, and then separated into a decanter. Turpentine can also be recovered when condensate is purified after evaporation in the evaporation plant.

Turpentine process Södra Cell Bioproducts

Sustainable and resource efficient

Södra derives turpentine from the raw material used in our pulp mills. No extra trees are harvested for its production, the turpentine has the same origin as our other products, and no valuable raw material goes to waste.

The raw material for our turpentine comes from the sustainable forests of our members. Since these members comprise tens of thousands of small-scale forest owners, each with their own goals and visions, it contributes to the variety and diversity in the Swedish forest. About 70 percent of our members are FSC® and/or PEFC™ certified.
