Södra's prioritised political issues

Below you will find our prioritized public affairs initiatives within industry and forestry. We actively work to improve political conditions for forestry and the forest industry. Our initiatives span from local to international levels, where we cooperate with various stakeholders to promote sustainable development and strengthen ownership rights. By participating in consultation responses, panel debates, and meetings with decision-makers, we ensure that the voice of the forest estate is heard in important political matters.

The Forest Inquiry 2024

The government has started a comprehensive review of national forest policy to create a sustainable and competitive future for forestry. Learn more about the inquiry, including important proposals, Södra's views, and potential impacts for forest owners and the forest industry.

Anyone whose property is significantly restricted should be entitled to compensation.

Regulatory changes to enable increased growth.

A new method for reporting the climate benefits of forests, including substitution effects and emissions.

An improved approach to forestry matters in the EU, regarding both negotiation and implementation.

Forestry

The Deforestation Regulation

The EU has decided on a new regulation aimed at reducing deforestation on a global level. The Deforestation Regulation requires a number of different raw materials to be free from deforestation. 

No forest may be converted to land for agricultural use.

Ancient forest may only be converted through natural regeneration.

Natural regeneration may only be converted to planted forest and natural regeneration.

Planted forest may be converted to trees and bushland, forest plantation, planted forest and natural regeneration.

The Nature Restoration Regulation

The Nature Restoration Regulation is a new EU legislation aimed at improving biodiversity, strengthening ecosystem resilience, and contributing to EU climate goals by restoring and recreating damaged ecosystems in the EU. 

Biodiversity should be strengthened within the EU.

Damaged ecosystems should be restored by 2050.

Different types of habitats and species should be able to achieve and maintain their long-term viability.
