Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between counter battens and support battens?

Counter battens and support battens are two essential components in roofing, each with different functions and placements.

  • Counter battens are installed horizontally over the roof underlay or tongue-and-groove boards. They create a ventilation gap that improves airflow and helps prevent moisture problems.
  • Support battens are placed vertically on top of the counter battens. They serve as the structural support for roof tiles or other roofing materials, helping to distribute the weight evenly across the roof.

Counter battens are thinner, while support battens are thicker and stronger to bear the load of the roofing material. Together, they ensure that the roof is both well-ventilated and structurally sound.

What is the correct way to install counter battens and support battens?

To install counter battens and support battens correctly:

1. Start by attaching the counter battens horizontally over the roof underlay or tongue-and-groove boards.

2. Then place the support battens vertically on top of the counter battens and fasten them securely.

3. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes to ensure the best results.

What type of wood is best for roof trusses and other load-bearing structures?

For roof trusses and other load-bearing components, the best choice is typically spruce (Picea abies) or pine (Pinus sylvestris). These softwoods are:

  • Strong and durable
  • Relatively lightweight
  • Easy to work with

They offer an excellent balance between structural performance and workability, making them ideal for construction where strength and reliability are essential.

How is wood treated to resist moisture and pests?

Wood is treated with wood preservatives, such as impregnation agents, to protect it from moisture, mould, and insects. For outdoor use, its important to use pressure-treated wood, which has been infused with protective substances under high pressure to ensure deep and long-lasting protection.

What wood dimensions are needed for different parts of the roof?

The size you need depends on the roof’s design and load requirements. Common dimensions include:

  • Roof trusses: 45×145 mm or 45×195 mm
  • Counter battens: 25×50 mm
  • Support battens: 45×70 mm
