How do I recycle treated timber?

Recycling treated timber requires special handling, as it often contains chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Here are a few steps you can follow:

  1. Drop-off at a Recycling Centre: Pressure-treated wood must be taken to a recycling centre equipped to handle hazardous waste. It is illegal to burn treated wood yourself, as it can release harmful substances.
  1. Sorting: At the recycling centre, the wood is sorted to determine whether it qualifies as hazardous waste. Modern treated wood often contains fewer harmful substances and may sometimes be reused or recycled as material.
  1. Energy Recovery: If the wood is classified as hazardous, it is typically sent to energy recovery facilities where it is incinerated under controlled conditions to generate energy.
  1. Contact Your Municipality: If you're unsure how to handle your pressure-treated wood, contact your local municipality for specific guidelines and information about the nearest recycling centre.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your pressure-treated wood is handled in an environmentally friendly and safe way.

How do I maintain outdoor areas built with treated timber?

Follow these steps to  keep outdoor areas made from pressure-treated timber looking their best and extend their lifespan:

  1. Cleaning: Use a scrubbing brush and a mild detergent to clean the surface. Avoid using a pressure washer, as it can damage the wood.
  1. Oiling: Apply wood oil regularly, preferably once a year to maintain moisture resistance and protect against cracking. Use an oil that is suitable for pressure-treated wood.
  1. Inspection: Regularly inspect the wood for signs of damage, mould, or algae. If you notice any issues, address them immediately to prevent further deterioration.
  1. Weather Protection: If possible, protect your wooden structures from direct sunlight and heavy rain by using covers or placing them under a shelter.
  1. Repairs: Replace damaged or rotten parts immediately to prevent the damage from spreading to other areas of the structure.

Following these steps will help ensure that outdoor areas built with pressure-treated wood remain in good condition and look great for years to come.

How do I store timber correctly to prevent damage?
  1. Protect from Moisture: Store the timber in a dry place, protected from rain and ground moisture. Use pallets or similar supports to keep the wood off the ground.
  1. Ventilation: Ensure that air can circulate around the timber. This helps prevent mould and rot.
  1. Protect from Sunlight: Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause cracking and warping.
  1. Covering: Use a tarpaulin or other protective covering, but make sure there is space for air to circulate.
  1. Regular Inspection: Check the wood regularly to ensure it hasn’t been damaged or exposed to moisture.
