Turpentine from the forest

How we produce our turpentine

Turpentine (crude sulphate turpentine) is primarily produced through degassing when the wood used for our pulp is heated with steam and hot cooking liquor. The turpentine is directed to a heat exchanger where it condenses into liquid form, and is then separated in a decanter. Turpentine can also be extracted when condensate is purified after evaporation in the evaporation plant.

Sustainable and resource-efficient

Turpentine from the family forestry

Södra's turpentine is extracted from the same raw material used in our pulp mills. This means that no trees are harvested solely for the production of turpentine – instead, we ensure that the entire tree is used to maximise the value of every part.

The raw material comes from our members’ sustainably managed forests. Since our members are tens of thousands of small-scale forest owners, each with their own goals and visions, this contributes to diversity and variation in the Swedish forest landscape. Around 70% of our members are certified according to PEFC and/or FSC®.
