Södra’s innovation projects

Innovation and research at Södra are carried out across six areas: forestry, wood products, paper, textiles, chemicals, and energy. The work focuses on developing new products and solutions that can replace fossil-based alternatives and support the green transition.

BraSatt, future regeneration techniques

We have taken forest regeneration to the next level by developing an autonomous planting machine that raises plant survival rates, reduces our impact on the ground, and makes life easier for us humans. BraSatt is a great example of how we use the latest technology to drive development within forestry.

Tannin – the tanning agent of the future

We took a big step into a new market with an innovative tanning agent that offers a vegetable-based alternative for the leather processing industry. Tannin extracted from bark is a new venture for us from what is today an untapped resource. Our tannin is a natural tanning agent that reduces dependence on fossil chemicals with a unique provenance; family forestry.

Lignin for a fossil-free future

Sulphate lignin will become one of Södra's largest businesses and an important step in our strategy to make more of every tree. We’re sure lignin will change the playing field and through our research and industrial innovation, we’re driving the development of new fossil-free products. Products that make a real difference. Lignin is a valuable resource and part of a circular economy.

Agromass, an Innovative pulp

We’re working on a new type of pulp that combines agricultural residues with traditional forest raw materials. By including residues from agriculture in our product mix, we can offer another option for sustainable and resource-efficient products such as toilet paper and napkins.

World-leading research on fossil-free glue

Today, almost all adhesives are fossil-based, largely due to a lack of knowledge and technology to develop fossil-free alternatives. That’s why, in collaboration with three universities and 11 other companies, we’ve established the competence center BioGlue-Centre to accelerate progress in bio-based adhesives

OnceMore®

OnceMore®

The world's first large-scale process for recycling mixed textiles. OnceMore® can be used to make viscose among other things. It’s a high-quality textile pulp made from recycled textiles and wood from our sustainably managed Swedish forests.

We advance building with wood

To make wood an obvious choice for sustainable construction in the future, we need more than demand. So Södra joined of one of Sweden's largest research projects, looking at sustainable construction with wood. We want to raise awareness of and lower the barriers to choosing wood in high-rise constructions.

Our biomethanol is fossil-free, renewable, and reduces climate impact compared to fossil methanol. By replacing fossil fuels, we contribute to a more sustainable industry and transport sector and we’re proud to be first in the world with industrial scale fossil-free biomethanol production

Durapulp and Fresh

The demand for environmentally-friendly alternatives to plastic is increasing. We see huge potential in forest fibres, which is why we’ve spent years working on developing solutions to mould wood fibre into 3D forms for a wide range of applications from food packaging to disposable products.
