Liquid Forest® Biomethanol

Industry

We believe in a sustainable future without today’s fossil fuels and chemicals. And we think bio-based alternatives is the solution. Our Liquid Forest® biomethanol is a great example. Biomethanol is an important additive in many products, which is why we’ve made significant investments in renewable biomethanol sourced from forest raw material from family forestry.

Frequently asked questions

What is Södra’s biomethanol made from?

Our biomethanol is produced from the same forest raw material used in our paper pulp and textile pulp.

What makes Södra’s biomethanol a greener alternative?

Södra’s biomethanol is a renewable product, produced without fossil fuels and without compromising the properties expected of traditional methanol.

How much biomethanol can Södra offer annually?

We can offer 5,250 tonnes of biomethanol per year.

What are the advantages of Södra's biomethanol compared to traditional methanol?

The advantages of Södra's biomethanol are that it is entirely biobased and renewable, with properties and quality that match all types of methanol available on the market.

Sustainability from the forest

Certified sustainability all the way

By using biomethanol from Södra, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint – by up to 99%. The product is certified according to ISCC, which means that the production is environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. Biomethanol is therefore an important product for a sustainable future.

The raw material for our biomethanol comes from the responsibly managed forests of Södra's members. They sum up to more than 50 000 small-scale forest owners, each with their own goals and visions, which add to diversity and variation in the Swedish forest. Around 70% of the members are certified according to PEFC or FSC®, or both.

How we produce biomethanol

Our production of biomethanol begins with the sulphate pulp process at the mill in Mönsterås. Wood chips are cooked with chemicals to separate the wood into its components—cellulose and hemicellulose (pulp) and lignin. Methanol is formed when the wood and chemicals react during this process.
