The forest and politics

All forest owners are somewhat affected by various societal decisions. Over the years, Södra has worked so that members can conduct their forestry without too many restrictions. In 1983, forest owners demonstrated against the government's proposal for compulsory felling and compulsory deposits in a timber account.

Södra's political work has focused on defending ownership rights and the ability to freely own and manage forests on reasonable terms. More than half of Sweden's forest land is privately owned, and the association strives to create favorable conditions for their forestry operations.

Throughout the years, Södra, together with LRF and other forest owner associations, has worked to prevent or moderate many proposals related to land encroachment, taxes, nature protection, and business conditions.

The united strength of Södra's and the forest owners' movements' advocacy efforts has yielded results. Here are some examples of business policy issues where the forest owners' joint efforts have played a significant role:

  • Abolition of the Forest Conservation Fee
  • Stopping the proposal to finance Sweden's EU fee through the taxation of forest properties
  • The subsidy of the so-called 50-krona after the storm Gudrun
  • Introduction of KOMET, landowner initiative for the protection of valuable forests
  • The Forest's Water, the forest owners' movement's campaign for increased water consideration in forestry
  • Encroachment issues, such as with new power lines and roads
  • Introduction of forest and environmental certification according to PEFC
  • Increased landowner influence in wildlife management
  • Handling nature protection, such as during the formation of nature reserves
