From Innovation to lignin
Innovation at Södra involves more than technology and new solutions. It’s driven by skilled employees with the courage to try new ideas in their quest to extract maximum value from every part of every tree. We’re turning vision into reality, not least, building the first commercial sulphate lignin plant in Sweden.

Largest in the world for lignin
Sweden’s first commercial sulphate lignin plant will also make us the largest producer of sulphate lignin in the world. Through innovation and cooperation, we create new revenue streams, strengthen competitiveness, and drive the industry towards a more sustainable future. We’re creating a circular economy where every part of the tree is a valuable resource.

What is lignin?
Lignin is like a glue, holding the fibres in a tree together, ensuring it stands strong and firm. As a renewable and bio-based raw material, it has the potential to replace fossil chemicals and materials in a wide range of applications. Lignin can be used as biofuel and a source of energy and is an important material for the future.
What is lignin used for?
Potential applications for lignin are wide-ranging, it could replace a considerable number of fossil materials and chemicals. Lignin is already in use today (see list), but we are only just beginning to unlock its full potential.
Plastics and rubber
Wood glue
Paints and varnishes
