First in the world with biomethanol
We are proud to be the first in the world with a facility that produces fossil-free biomethanol on an industrial scale. In 2020, we inaugurated the world’s first commercial plant producing fossil-free biomethanol at our site in Mönsterås, Sweden. Biomethanol is an innovation that plays a vital role in the transition to a sustainable, fossil-free economy.
Thanks to the knowledge and commitment of our employees, we can now transform forest byproducts into a new product that reduces climate impact and strengthens the circular economy—an innovation that simply didn’t exist just a few years ago.

Our ambition is to reduce society’s dependence on fossil resources while creating new opportunities and improved profitability for Södra’s members.
Biomethanol is now part of the circular processes already in place at all three of Södra’s mills. Our strategy is to make the very best use of every part of the tree. For us, it is essential to focus on innovations that support a circular economy and reduce the reliance on fossil-based materials.
