Our Recycling Process

With OnceMore®, Södra contributes to the vital transition towards a more sustainable textile industry. Instead of increasing waste in landfills, our partners supply us with their mixed textile waste.

OnceMore

What can we recycle?

The textile waste we utilize is traceable, secured over several years, and consistent - ensuring we have a reliable product in the long term. Currently, we only use RCS-certified post-consumer textile waste.

What types of textile waste do you accept?

Fibers must contain a minimum of 70% cotton by weight and a maximum of 30% polyester in a batch, although up to 50% polyester is accepted in individual garments. No other fibers are permitted in the textiles, such as fabrics, threads, or labels, but accessories like buttons and zippers are exempt.

Color: Only white/off-white textiles are accepted. Colored textiles may be accepted after testing.

Printing: Pigment prints covering less than 5% of the surface are accepted. Reactive dye prints are accepted after testing. Heat transfer prints that adhere to the fabric surface are not acceptable.

Elastane is not acceptable, nor are other synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyamide, or polypropylene.

Interfacing should be made of cotton voile or cellulose where possible; polyester-based interfacing must contain no more than 30% non-cotton content. No glue is acceptable.

Cellulosic fibers (mainly lyocell and viscose) are accepted up to 5% of the total batch, but the percentage in individual garments can be higher. Please see our material specifications below.

How do we recycle?

OnceMore® is a chemical recycling process. We have developed a method to separate cotton from polyester. How—it's our secret. We separate cotton from polyester and rejuvenate the cotton fibers. When polyester is separated from cotton, we burn the polyester to generate energy, which powers the OnceMore® process. The cotton cellulose is then mixed with wood cellulose. The mixture is cleaned and bleached. At this stage, the pulp still contains up to 90% water. Before sending it to fiber producers, we dry the pulp into sheets to facilitate transportation.

What is the result?

Today, our final product contains 20% recycled cotton and 80% wood from Södra’s family forests. Our goal is to produce a material containing 50% recycled cotton and 50% wood. The OnceMore product is the raw material and the first step in the textile value chain before it becomes viscose, modal, lyocell fabrics, and garments.
