Tannin

Industry

We are now investing in sustainable tannin production at our facility in Värö, Sweden. Tannin is a plant-based tanning agent derived from bark that can be used to process leather in a more environmentally friendly way compared to, for example, chrome.

Frequently asked questions

When will Södra begin producing tannin?

We will begin producing tannin during 2026.

Are you cutting down more trees to produce tannin?

No, we will not be cutting down more trees solely to produce tannin. At Södra, we actively work to make use of the entire tree. The raw material for our tannin is bark, which is a side stream that arises when the wood is debarked before being processed into pulp, sawn timber or cross-laminated timber.

What will the facility’s production capacity be?

The production line will have the capacity to produce tanning agent for millions of square metres of leather.

Innovation from family forestry

Are you ready to explore our new opportunity?

Using bark for tanning is nothing new, but we are now industrialising the process of extracting tannin from bark and making it a product for the market. We will produce large volumes of tannin and look into more potential applications where tannin can make a difference. We are keen to connect with potential partners who want to cooperate on how our tannin could benefit your business and contribute to the transition to a fossil-free society – within or beyond the leather industry.
