Södra Timber to invest in automatic sorting at Kinda

The Board today decided on the final element of the development plan, namely the new automatic sorting facility.

Södra Timber is to invest in an automatic sorting facility on the trimmer at Södra Timber Kinda. This installation will take place in 2012 to ensure optimized sawing of pine from Södra's eastern timber sources.

The Board has already given its support to a development plan concerning a transition to pure pine production at Södra Timber Kinda. Funding has initially been granted for sawn timber stacking, an automatic edger, sorting unseasoned boards and an expansion of boiler capacity.

The Board today decided on the final element of the development plan, namely the new automatic sorting facility. Automatic sorting means that image processing will be used in the sorting of timber, which is otherwise carried out manually. These investments will give the sawmill a major facelift with a view to enhancing efficiency. They will also make the sawmill more competitive, allowing it to utilise raw materials more efficiently and improve quality sorting.

Södra Timber Kinda is undergoing a transformation into a pure pine sawmill. Up until now, the sawmill has worked with half spruce and half pine. Only pine will be processed at the mill as of the start of next year. Södra Timber perceives a need and an opportunity to make the most of the better pine timber in the area. The sawmill will be producing 225 000 cubic metres of pine per year.

This investment means that Södra Timber will now have two specialised pine sawmills, Kinda and Unnefors, for handling quality timber.
