Södra El - green electricity from the forest
Södra is now Sweden's leading producer of green electricity from biofuel with an annual production of 1.8 TWh. Through a partnership with southern Swedish public utility company Lunds Energikoncernen, Södra will commence supplying this to members and employees from 1 January 2009 through its new subsidiary Södra El.
Södra has been making major energy investments for many years, the objective being to increase electricity production while at the same time making electricity usage in the mills as efficient as possible. Not only are Södra sulphate pulp mills self-sufficient in electricity, they also produce a surplus.
In addition, Södra is planning to build 200-300 wind turbines on its own land as well as that of its members. The electricity produced from these wind turbines will also be sold through Södra El. In total, Södra will be able to supply all its mills as well as meeting the electricity needs of members and employees - along with many others.
This green electricity from the forest and wind turbines is based on a sustainable source of energy that is constantly being renewed. This makes it possible to use electricity with a good conscience while also contributing to the environment.
