Formulosa – cellulose for the future

The Formulosa research project, which has just got of the ground, aims to develop new cartonboard packaging - of all kinds. There is an enthusiastic team behind the project with members from Södra Cell, Chalmers University of Technology and Tetra Pak.

With a focus on food packaging, Formulosa (free formability with functionalized cellulose) hopes to modify cellulose - to make it plastic to the extent that it can be injection-moulded into functional and attractive packaging as required by customers. There is a great deal of interest in formable cellulose.

There are three doctoral students taking part in the project who are supervised by Chalmers. Both Södra Cell and Tetra Pak have provided individuals to serve as co-supervisors from the industry. Two research areas from Chalmers are involved in Formulosa: Organic Chemistry from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Polymeric Materials and Composites from the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology.
